Late on Friday night, Robin Lehner, the former NHL goalie, finally broke a nearly two-year silence on a series of deeply dark and emotional social media posts that described his personal and legal struggles.
Many were concerned by Robin Lehner's posts, disjointed and accusatory, with little clarity as to just what he was trying to assert.
The first post by Lehner, who has spoken candidly about dealing with mental health issues in the past, read that his brain was "fully broken" and, incredibly, that his name, Lehner, should be erased because it's "evil."
A post sent later explained that, apparently, his account had been hacked to deflect any possible legal fallout. He expressed frustration at the COVID-19 vaccine policy of the NHL and NHLPA and shared his financial issues regarding loans.
He even went the length of mentioning how he had been in a suicidal ward, making these reveals very serious.
A third message blamed Lehner's father for having 'ruined' his life while thanking an unnamed member of the Islanders organization for their ongoing support during what had been a very difficult time in his career.
The fourth message went after the Vegas Golden Knights directly, naming "Pete", presumably former head coach Peter DeBoer.
And Lehner continued to speak glowingly of NHL agent Allan Walsh and Golden Knights GM Kelly McCrimmon while citing a number of other grievances. That last post, the most distressing, sounded like some sort of dark finality.
Now, the question nobody more than the NHL, more than the media, or more than people close to Lehner, seems to know is, why has no one done anything about his disturbing statements?
Social media is filled with concern that he gets the help he needs. Those posts would be his cry for help, and he too has asked that the NHL, the NHLPA, and his former teams all reach out and support him through this tough time.
