English Hockey Club Honors Former NHL Forward Adam Johnson with Number Retirement Following his Tragic Passing
The Nottingham Panthers of the EIHL honored former player Adam Johnson today, retiring his number after his tragic passing.
A little over a year ago, the hockey world was stunned by the passing of Former Penguins forward Adam Johnson.
Johnson was playing with the Nottingham Panthers of the EIHL, the top pro league serving the United Kingdom.
He passed away after an on-ice collision with another player where he was cut in the neck.
His passing was felt around the hockey world as everyone was shocked and horrified by the news.
We have seen a lasting impact on our sport as well as many leagues and players began to take their own safety a little more seriously.
For example, shortly after Johnson's death, all three CHL leagues implemented more stringent safety regulations, mandating all players wear neck protection.
Today, Johnson's legacy grows in another way. The Nottingham Panthers released a video dedicated to his memory and honoring him with the biggest honor any professional athlete can achieve.
The team officially retired his number 47 so that no one else will ever wear it.
Johnson's aunt, Lynn DeGrio spoke about him at his memorial service, highlighting his character and love for his fiance.
"Adam was genuine. He was humble, modest, down to earth and never boasted about his accomplishments. He lit up a room with his little smile and quick and witty comments. He loved to dream about what his future was going to look like, right down to the fine details. One thing he knew for sure is that it would include the love of his life, Ryan Wolfe. They spent hours planning the perfect life together."
The hockey world continues to mourn Johnson and we continue to keep his family in our thoughts.
Rest in peace Adam.
