Allan Walsh has made a name for himself as the most outspoken player agent in professional sports, or at least in the NHL.
He has been a staunch critic of NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, especially when it comes to the league's hard salary cap structure.
The salary cap is intended to create parity so no one team can become a powerhouse, and to a large extend it has worked.
However, it also suppresses the wages of the players, who make far less than other professional athletes in the NFL, MLB, and NBA.
Luckily, as the salary cap grows, the gap between NHL salaries and those in other sports should start to close.
Next season we could see the beginning of a new era in the league as Walsh revealed that the cap is actually expected to jump 9 million dollars to just under 100 million for the 2025-26 season.
The agent revealed this news on the SPDN show Agent Provocateur, of which he is the agent and Adam Wylde is the host.
Walsh has a long track record of discussing the salary cap at length, and has consistently been a critic.
He has pointed out that today's superstars like Cale Makar make less money that their counterparts did decades ago when you account for inflation, which is certainly a bad look for the league.
Gary Bettman has chosen not to respond to this rumor, and continues to suggest that the cap will only go up somewhere between 4 and 5 million dollars.
That would be good for the owners, whom he represents, but would it be best for the players and the fans?
The answer to that is no. Hopefully, Walsh is correct and we can start to see the NHL make some real gains.
Perhaps the league can even become competitive with the NBA like they were 30 years ago before Bettman took over as commissioner.
