Former Humboldt Broncos goaltender qualifies for 2024 Paralympic Games
Jacob Wasserman a goaltender for the Broncos was on that bus that day involved in a crash with a transport truck. Although the crash rendered him a paraplegic, Wasserman has taken what he's learned through that experience and qualified for the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympic Games in late August and early September.
Qualifying for an international event is very special, but living out your dream-like Wassermann will be doing after such a tragic event is something to marvel at. He always dreamed that he'd be representing Canada one day, albeit in a different sport, but he couldn't be prouder of what he was able to accomplish.
" For 18 years I was going to be a pro hockey player. That was the one goal and it had to change and it was sort of difficult for sure at first, but I really learned if you keep going forward with the dreams that you had, they'll work out for you,"
He humbly credits his support system including his wife Madison, his parents and his coaches for the success he's achieved in just a short time "It's been so special to see the support and the excitement from so many people, like everybody from around here, from around home and then around the world that I've never even met before."
The twenty-four-year-old recognizes that the journey has just begun and that the work he puts in back in Saskatchewan has the potential to define how well he competes when his number is called in Paris. It's not quite the same as he imagined growing up, but it's a moment he won't soon forget.
