Former NFL quarterback Alex Smith broke his tibia and fibula and then contracted sepsis. Not only was his career in jeopardy but so was his life.

Six years ago, former NFL quarterback Alex Smith's life changed when during a game he was hit. The incident which occurred caused the tibia and fibula of his right leg to break significantly. While he managed to recover from the break as well as sepsis to play the game he grew up playing, he wouldn't be the same player again.

Smith's injury is a reminder of how tough players can be no matter what the sport. The argument whether hockey players are tougher than football players or vice versa is an argument for the ages. Coming back from career-threatening circumstances in any regard shows how differently athletes are built compared to regular people.

Alex Smiths' circumstance isn't uncommon; however, the severity of the injury was and there were talks that not only was it life-altering, but life-threatening for some time as well. Time and time again, athletes who are faced with injuries battle back to try to compete again. Some are successful while others face the reality that their sporting endeavours must come to an end and it's time to move on to something else.

Unfortunately for all of us whether an athlete or not, father time catches up to us and we're forced to slow down or stop some if not all the things that have had a hand in shaping us as humans. Alex Smith is fortunate today; while his NFL career ended abruptly and prematurely, he is still able to enjoy life, which is what many of us take for granted.
