Under Gary Bettman's leadership as Commissioner, the business of the NHL has improved mightily, but in recent times he's come under fire many times, often for things that either alienate fans or make it hard for them to find the game of hockey. This season, he has been called out by fans for his scheduling of the Frozen Frenzy, which came on NBA's Opening night rather than simply doing it the night before when there was very little competition, or another time that doesn't overlap with a huge event.
Unfortunately, the criticism is now occurring again on social media, with fans calling out the NHL's decision to have 11 games tonight, with the election officially falling on this night that will likely take away the attention of a majority of the audience in North America.
Sure, fans all over the world may not be that invested in politics, but given where the games are played, it's safe to say that the league didn't bear this in mind when they put the schedule together this season, as it would have been very easy to have just a few games played in Canada tonight and load up the schedule on Wednesday. However, after the incident with the Frozen Frenzy, it appears as though Bettman and the NHL don't really take such events into consideration when making a schedule, simply believing that whenever he puts games on, the fans will tune in.
Ultimately, this is an issue that has popped up time and time again for the NHL, and while the product on the ice is fantastic, marketing and scheduling are still two major issues for the league, and it needs to be fixed immediately.
