As he nears his mid-70's, Gary Bettman has been called by many to retire, and now he's addressed his future in the role of NHL Commissioner.

Gary Bettman has been the Commissioner of the NHL dating back to February of 1993, and in that time, the business of the NHL has grown exponentially, even if those opposed to Bettman in the role can't see it.

However, Bettman is now into his 70's, and many believe his time in the role is coming to an end, with NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman even revealing that Bill Daly is the likely successor to Bettman's role as NHL Commissioner.

Now, Bettman has addressed his future in the role with those calls for retirement, and while he doesn't give a definite end date, he reveals that for the immediate future, he's committed to his position and doesn't see a change coming anytime soon.

«I love what I do, I'm energized by it. The league has been growing, I've got great support of ownership. Hockey's in a good place and I'm thrilled to be a part of it.

If I didn't have the energy and I didn't love what I do and get thrilled every day to go to work, then I'd have to think about slowing down"

For those that aren't fans of Bettman, who certainly makes some questionable decisions every season, this won't come as great news, but given the salary cap rise in Bettman's time and the addition of many new teams, it's good for business overall.

At 73 though, it's unlikely he'll remain in the role beyond 80, so there is definitely an end date for his role, but after 30 years of success, it will be a sad day for many when he moves on and we find a new leader in the role.
