Earlier today, Boston Bruins management, including Cam Neely met with the media and faced an onslaught of questions about the contract status of RFA goaltender Jeremy Swayman. Those questions led to Neely saying something that he likely and should regret.
That response garnered what the Bruins probably consider an ungodly amount of attention on social media, with many speculating that the Bruins offered Swayman a contract that totalled $64M over an unknown term, making Swayman look like the 'bad guy'. Unfortunately for the Bruins, Lewis Gross, who represents Swayman released a statement regarding Neely's earlier comments.
Normally, an RFA doesn't have as much control as Swayman does, but in this case, he holds all the cards. Without reaching an agreement with Swayman before trading Linus Ulmark to the Ottawa Senators, the Bruins put themselves at a severe disadvantage. The statement from Gross Monday evening puts even more pressure on the Bruins management team to tuck their tails between their legs if they do not want their number one goaltender to request a trade out of town.
