Yesterday, in an Atlantic Division clash, the Detroit Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2, thanks to Jeff Petry's two-goal performance, his first goals of the season:
During the game, an incident occurred between Jonatan Berggren and Connor Dewar.
After a whistle, Dewar was standing near the Red Wings goalie Ville Husso, when Berggren came up to him.
Dewar made a motion to hit him, and Berggren completely lost it. He landed a dangerous cross-check on Dewar's head, making both players collapse on the ice.
Check out the hit in the video below:
In breaking news, the NHL's Department of Player Safety has officially made a ruling on the incident.
On X, they announced that they decided to fine Berggren $2,148.44 for cross-checking, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Read their statement here:
For such a dangerous cross-check, fans hoped to see the NHL suspend Berggren.
On X, many state that things would've turned out differently if the Leafs had been on the other side of the story:
Others are saying that he should get a two-game suspension like the Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews got in 2022 for cross-checking Buffalo Sabres' Rasmus Dahlin:
Berggren, 24, scored six points, including four goals, in 30 games with the Red Wings this season. He was drafted 33rd overall by Detroit in 2018 and played 109 games for them since.
As for Dewar, the Minnesota Wild's 92nd overall pick in 2018, has one point, an assist, in 15 games with the Leafs this season. He's signed to a one-year, $1,180,000 contract with Toronto and could end up on the free-agent market next summer if he doesn't get traded by his organization this season.
