NHL provides first update on Steve Kozari
Earlier today a scary scene took place in Pittsburgh during a game between the Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning. In the 3rd period the game was halted as referee Steve Kozari was stretchered off following an awkward collision.
The incident occurred when Tampa Bay, Lightning defender Haydn Fleury collided with Steve Kozari near center ice. It immediately appeared that Kozari was knocked out cold. Medical staff rushed to the fallen official.
After being on the ice for several minutes, Kozari was placed on a stretcher and was transported to hospital. Both benches cleared as Kozari was being stretchered off as a sign of support and respect.
Now hours after the incident the NHL has provided their first update on the referee's health.
Referee Steve Kozari was transported to UPMC Mercy hospital for precautionary reasons after a collision with Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Haydn Fleury in the third period of the Penguins-Lightning game this afternoon. Kozari is conscious and alert, has the use of all of his extremities and is expected to make a full recovery.
This is great news as it appeared in the moment the injury could be serious. We continue to offer our thoughts to Steve Kozari as he attempts to comeback from this injury.
