One of Mexico's best hockey players ever has got himself into some hot water recently and has been handed a lengthy suspension in his home country.

In a game in Mexico's top division, the Teotihuacan Priests were taking on the Olmec Stone Heads when 36-year-old Santiago Sierra slewfoot his opponent, Brandon Mendez, who didn't have the puck, in the neutral zone.

Mendez was down on the ice for quite a while in pain, while his teammates went after Sierra to get revenge. Many were wondering what would come of this and it appears that the Mexico Ice Hockey Federation and the Liga Mexicana Elite de Hockey have come to a decision regarding discipline to Santiago Sierra.

According to Puck Empire, the Liga Mexicana Elite de Hockey has suspended Santiago Sierra for one year, thus ending his 2024 season with the Teotihuacan Priests.

"Santiago Sierra 🇲🇽, one of the better players to ever come out of Mexico, has been suspended for one year after delivering a vicious slewfoot to an unsuspecting player without the puck." Puck Empire said.

In five games this year with the Priests, Sierra had six points (five goals, one assist) in what is his first professional season since the 2019-20 campaign, which he also spent with Teotihuacan.

After watching the video countless times, the Liga Mexicana Elite de Hockey absolutely made the right decision to suspend Sierra for one year. We'll have to wait and see if Sierra, who will be 37 when his suspension is up, returns to the Priests to continue his professional career.
