Team Canada Announces Devastating Injury Update on Projected Number 1 Overall Pick Matthew Schaefer
Team Canada announced a terrible injury update on their top defenseman Matthew Schaefer after he left last night's game.
Considered to be the favorite to be selected 1st overall in the 2025 NHL Draft by a few scouting reports, Matthew Schaefer was a key member of Team Canada's defensive unit heading into this year's World Junior Championship.
Unfortunately, last night, in a disappointing 3-2 loss to Latvia, Schaefer was injured and had to leave the game.
Early in the first period, he collided with a post and never returned to the bench.

This is a terrible loss for Team Canada, but also for his OHL team, the Erie Otters. Schaefer had two points in the first game of the tournament but played an ever more important role with the Otters, scoring 22 points in 17 games. At only 17 years old, this is an impressive feat.
Now, Team Canada had the tough challenge to replace him.
With highly-regarded defensemen Zayne Parekh and Carter Yakemchuk not making the final roster for the tournament, many believed either one of them would get a call from Team Canada.
However, they didn't, and the team surprised many experts when they announced his replacement.
Indeed, it was revealed that Sawyer Mynio will take his spot while he recovers from a broken collarbone.
Per TSN's Bob McKenzie:
Mynio is a 19-year-old, 6-foot-1 defenseman currently playing for the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL. In 18 games, the Vancouver Canucks' 89th overall pick in 2023 tallied 19 points.
He now has an opportunity to play a big role in Canada's attempt to bounce back from their tough loss to Latvia.
The team will be back in action tomorrow against Germany. Fans are eager to see how the other players will step up in Schaefer's absence.
