Wayne Simmonds to sign one more NHL contract
Wayne Simmonds to sign one more NHL contract with one of his former teams
Wayne Simmonds was by far of the best power forwards of the last 20 years. The strong, smooth skating forward added a physical element to his game and always held opponents accountable. Unfortunately for Simmonds injuries derailed the latter part of his career after he played his 1000th game.
Simmonds last game came April 8th 2023 as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Montreal Canadiens. Today however it was announced that he will sign one final NHL contract with the Philadelphia Flyers. With this contract, he also announces his official retirement from the NHL as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers.
It's hard to describe my emotions on a day like this, but one of my very first thoughts as I look back is my life in Philadelphia and playing for the Flyers. Taking the ice in a Flyers sweater is a special feeling and it's one that I'm truly proud of. The history of this franchise and standard of being a Flyer that was set is unique and one that I hold in the highest regard. Perhaps the biggest reason for that is the way the fans embrace this team. It was a thrill to play for you all these years, and you mean so much to me. I'd like to thank Dan Hilferty, Keith Jones and Danny Briere for making this a special day and the fans for all their support throughout the years for me and my family.
Simmonds finishes his career having played 1037 games, where he scored 263 goals and added 263 assists for 526 points. Over his 15 year career he played with Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Nashville, New Jersey, Buffalo and Toronto.
Congratulations Wayne on an incredible career.
