The trial of five former members of Team Canada at the 2018 World Juniors will be overseen by a well-known judge who has plenty of experience with high-profile cases

The five former members of Team Canada at the 2018 World Junior Championship are inching closer to their trial on assault charges. Now, a well-known judge with a wealth of experience in high-profile cases has been appointed to the case.

According to TSN's Rick Westhead, the judge overseeing the case is Bruce Thomas, who has been in his position since 1999 and has tried major cases over the years.

"Thomas, who has been a judge since 1999, was Regional Senior Judge for Ontario's Southwest region from 2017-23. He has overseen some of the area's highest-profile trials in recent years, including cases involving alleged human trafficking and murder."

Meanwhile, Westhead said a trial date for the case to be heard in London, Ontario could be set this week. The five former World Junior players accused of assault have opted for a trial jury. They are Dillon Dubé, Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Cal Foote and Alex Formenton.

All five are no longer playing in the NHL, although Dube and McLeod are listed on KHL rosters for the 2024-25 season. They have all vowed to fight the charges. The charges were brought forward following an investigation by police into an alleged incident that happened at a gala event a few months after Team Canada won the World Juniors gold in 2018. The five were ordered to surrender to police in January of 2024 to be formally charged.
