During the 2nd period of last night's game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers, Sam Bennett got himself into a bit of hot water. After injuring Matthew Knies in the 1st period of the game, Bennett delivered a stiff crosscheck to the head and neck of Michael Bunting.

The play sent Bunting to the ice holding his neck, where Bennett delivered a second crosscheck to his back for good measure. On the play Bennett received a 2-minute minor for cross checking.

Today the NHL Department of Player Safety decided that Bennett's action should result in supplemental discipline and opted to issue the following fine:

Florida's Sam Bennett has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for Cross-checking against Toronto's Michael Bunting.

The DoPS has decided to not punish Bennett for his play involving Knies, as it should be. This fine aligns with the one received by Sam Lafferty for his crosscheck on Ross Colton during the first round of the playoffs.
