Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice has provided an update on Aleksander Barkov after a hit from Leon Draisaitl took him out of game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final
With the 2024 Stanley Cup Final heading to Edmonton for the next two games, Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice has provided an update on star player Aleksander Barkov after he left game 2 following a hit by the Oilers Leon Draisaitl.
Draisaitl was given a two-minute penalty on the play, which took place about half way through the third period of Florida's 4-1 win over Edmonton. Barkov left the game and did not return.
Maurice spoke with reporters today and said as far as he can tell, Barkov has not gotten any worse, which is a good sign.
"We had some things that needed to be looked at today that got looked at. There's nothing sinister there. He kind of passed that. He felt better today. Feels good. But you've got to give it another 24 hours to make sure that he feels strong."
There has been come talk of possible supplemental discipline in the form of a fine and/or suspension for Draisaitl. However, it looks like that's not going to happen.
"If this was a regular season game I think the league would probably be looking at this differently. Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final presents a diff scenario when you consider the lack of history with Draisaitl. Not anticipating a suspension."
Game 3 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final takes place Thursday night in Edmonton, with game 4 going on Saturday night. So far, Barkov had been a major factor in shutting down Edmonton's Connor McDavid, and Draisaitl, two of the most dangerous offensive hockey players on the planet.
