Full details of the Alex DeBrincat trade revealed
Earlier tonight, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet revealed that the Ottawa Senators had completed a trade with the Detroit Red Wings. The trade would send forward Alex DeBrincat to the Red Wings. At the time Friedman did not have full details on the return.
But moments ago, Frank Seravalli shared the following information.
Full trade:
To #LGRW :
Alex DeBrincat
To #GoSensGo :
2024 Conditional 1st (DET or BOS)
2024 4th Rd Pick
Dominik Kubalik
Donovan Sebrango This return is significantly less than what the Senators gave up for DeBrincat. Just last summer the Sens sent the 7th overall pick, a 2nd and 3rd rounder to the Chicago Blackhawks.
The conditions on the first round draft pick make this an even tougher deal for the Senators. This insures that the Red Wings will not have to transfer any high picks in the deal.
The initial condition on the first-round pick is as follows - the Red Wings will have the option of sending their own 2024 first-round pick or Boston's 2024 first-round pick (previously acquired on March 2, 2023) to Ottawa. However, if the Bruins' 2024 first-round selection is an eventual top-10 pick (following the annual draft lottery), Boston will have the option of retaining the pick and transfering its 2025 unprotected first-round selection to Detroit. The Red Wings will then have the option of sending that draft pick or their own first-round pick in 2024 to the Senators to complete this trade.
The Sens had such promise for DeBrincat and only receiving a conditional 1st and a prospect who played in the ECHL last year is not a win for the organization. Combined with the team friendly deal DeBrincat signed, this is a definite loss for Pierre Dorion.
