New Report Has The Leafs Involved In Possible Flip-Trade With The Ducks For Jacob Trouba
On Friday night, veteran defenseman Jacob Trouba made his Anaheim Ducks debut just a few days after being traded from the New York Rangers.
They moved him to the Anaheim Ducks for Urho Vaakanainen and a 4th-round pick reportedly to avoid putting him on the waiver wire.
Though the trade rumors involve the Montreal Canadiens, Buffalo Sabres, and Columbus Blue Jackets, Jacob Trouba has a no-trade clause that turned the deal to Anaheim.
It was said, however, that the Toronto Maple Leafs still kept an eye on Trouba, perhaps to circle back to a possible move up to the trade deadline in March.
"Leafs management likes big defenceman Jacob Trouba, the recently traded Rangers captain," reports Leafs insider Steve Simmons. "And they might have some interest in Trouba, if Anaheim or somebody else eats a lot of salary, at the deadline."
On the other hand, reports are that not only did he have Columbus on his no-trade list, but that he has listed all seven Canadian teams on his no-trade list as well, further complicating this speculation.
A further twist: Elliotte Friedman reported on his '32 Thoughts' podcast that the trade package had, at one time, included veteran defenseman Cam Fowler, but that the Rangers had pulled off, unable to fit in Fowler's $6.5 million cap hit for both this year and next.
"I heard that Anaheim wanted Fowler in this deal and I would have no doubt that Fowler wanted to be in this deal, I mean it's been out there he wants to be traded, he wants to play for a contender.
Obviously at the end of the day they couldn't get it done and I think one of the reasons is New York wanted the flexibility for both this year and next, they have a ton of cap room this year and Fowler is at $6.5m next year, I don't think they wanted that."
- Elliotte Friedman
Cam Fowler has mostly been a Duck throughout his career, and the veteran hasn't seen the postseason since the run of 2017.
Immensely talented, he's cooled off of late, and the heavy contract makes it tough to even fathom a real market for him elsewhere. A New York deal would have been interesting, but he'll be sticking in Anaheim for now.
