Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen threw some shade at Kevin Adams yesterday after the GM made comments about the city that went viral.

Adams held a media availability on Friday where he told reporters that Buffalo simply is not a free-agent destination.

He got a lot of attention for the comments as many took them as him complaining about the geography and politics of the area.

To some, it came across as an excuse for his lack of garnering any major free-agent additions to the team in recent years.

"We're not a destination city right now. Where you're going to be able to go out and UFAs that are key guys. And I just don't think that's a way to build a sustainable winner."

He would go on to say that in order to become a popular destination for free agents, the team has to build a history of success not just in the regular season, but in the playoffs.

He would even make jokes referencing other teams, specifically mentioning palm trees and taxes, both of which could be in reference to the Florida Panthers.

"You have to earn it. For me, it's really simple. You become a perennial playoff team, you make the playoffs, you have a chance to win the Stanley Cup year after year, you're on (fewer) no-trade lists. We don't have palm trees, we have taxes in New York, those are real and those are things you deal with. And trust me I'm in conversation every day and there's a lot of players in this league we need to earn their respect."

Fans certainly took it as a reference. The popular hockey Instagram page Slapshot even made a meme mock trade about it with the Sabres getting seven palm trees from the Panthers in exchange for New York taxes and a 2025 1st round pick.

The goalie very well could have not meant anything negative about it.

After all, it is a good thing to be able to laugh at yourself if you are in a not-so-great situation.

The young netminder probably just found the post to be funny. Still though, it could be interpreted as a slight against his general manager.

In fairness to him, Adams hasn't exactly done a great job building a contender.

And contenders are not built through free agency, that comes through the draft. Just look at the Predators this season.

The Sabres do have a fairly strong prospect pool, but it takes time for those guys to develop into legitimate NHLers.

Hopefully, for Adams' sake, they will develop well and eventually turn the team's fortunes around.

Even if they do though, it could be too late for him as the team will be looking into possible changes if things do not improve soon.
