When the Edmonton Oilers sent their $5 million a year goaltender to the AHL, the idea was for him to find his game again. It appears Jack Campbell needs to look much harder.
Campbell has played three games for the Bakersfield Condors since being sent to the minors about a week ago. None of them has gone well. Campbell has a record of 0-3-0, and has let in 13 goals on 72 shots. That gives him a goals against average of 4.36, and a dismal .819 save percentage. Some how, he's actually doing worse than he was with the Oilers.
This is a small sample size, but it's still an awful look for Campbell, as well as Oilers GM Ken Holland, who signed the netminder to a five-year deal 2022. Campbell has three years left on his contract after this season ends.
Like the Oilers or not, it's actually sad to see a player fall this hard and fast. Absolutely nothing seems to be going right for Campbell right now. And, while the Oilers would save some money by buying him, it's not as much as you might think, as shown in this screenshot from Capfriendly's buyout calculator..
While Edmonton enjoys a new coach bump, Campbell will have to dig deep in an attempt to change his fortunes.
