Moments ago, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman broke the news that defenceman Dmitry Orlov has signed a unique contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.
After beginning last season with the Washington Capitals on a hot streak and having an extremely successful stint with the Boston Bruins after the trade deadline, Orlov's value sky-rocketed in free agency. Carolina pounced to sign Orlov to a unique contract: just two years term with an annual value of $7.75M.
His offensive showing of 4 goals and 17 points in 23 games with Boston has added value to Orlov this offseason, but with no track record of previous offensive success, this contract could be a gamble for Carolina. However, as a team desperately trying to get over previous barriers in the playoffs, it's a gamble the organization is willing to take. The Hurricanes defence now could easily be considered the best in the NHL.
