Days after being bought out of his inflated $8.25M dollar contract with the Winnipeg Jets, veteran forward Blake Wheeler has chosen to sign with the New York Rangers in free agency.
Announced moments ago, Wheeler will join the Rangers on a one year deal paying him a discounted salary of $800K, with $300K of potential performance based bonuses.
Wheeler, now 36 years old, had a disappointing yet still valuable season this year, putting up 16 goals and 55 points in 72 games with a poor Jets team. As an depth offensive option for the New York Rangers, Wheeler could be a valuable asset to a potential playoff run.
