Jeremy Swayman's latest comments on contract negotiations with the Boston Bruins show he's not willing to leave any money on the table in order to play for the team
With the 2024-25 NHL season right around the corner, the Boston Bruins still don't have a contract with goaltender Jeremy Swayman. And, if his latest comments are any indication, Swayman will be getting every penny he feels he deserves with his latest deal. Swayman recently appeared on the "Shut Up, Marc!" podcast where he offered critical insight into his negotiations with the Boston Bruins. what it was like from the athlete's perspective to negotiate what will likely be his first long-term contract. Swayman answered that his perspective has changed greatly over the past year.
"If you were to ask me that same question a year ago, I would answer truthfully. And I would say, 'It's scary. It's a lot of resentment towards people that want you to succeed.' And when you're not being compensated for your endless efforts and doing what you do best, it's a nerve-wracking feeling because it's your family that you're fighting for.
For the answer that I'm going to give you this year is that I've educated myself and that I understand the business side of it all, and it's given me a complete new mindset of understanding the business and how to react to it. I understand the cap is going up and where it will be in years. I understand my comparables and how I can't ruin the goalie market for other guys that are going to be in my shoes down the line."
Swayman added he has studied business at the university of Maine, and is continuing that education through the NHLPA at Stanford University. He seems prepared to defend himself and his play at the negotiating table. At the same time, Swayman said playing for the Bruins is a dream come true.
"I think 10-year-old Jeremy Swayman didn't think in a million years that he'd be in this position he's in and the city he's in, and the amount of gratitude that I have to be in this situation completely covers up the negative side of everything. I couldn't be happier to be in this situation. At the end of the day, I'm stopping pucks for the Boston Bruins."
Before the beginning of the 2023-24 season, the Boston Bruins opted for arbitration with Swayman, leading to a leading to a one-year, $3.475 million contract. Both sides agreed not to file for arbitration this year, meaning negotiations can continue. With August almost gone, time is running out for the Bruins and the restricted free agent to get something done.
