While Ice Hockey isn't a common sport in Greece, the popularity continues to rise, with the Greek Ice Hockey League and Athens Ice Hockey League both continuing to improve in recent years.
Unfortunately, some bad news has recently emerged from there, with goaltender Dimitris Skotis tragically passing away recently at the age of 28.
After working towards the professional hockey ranks for years, Skotis played 8 games in the Athens Ice Hockey League last season, splitting time between three teams (Athens Cyclopes, Athens Minotaurs and the Athens Titans), improving throughout his time in the league.
In that time, he was 3-5-0 in eight starts, and while little is known beyond that about his performance, he clearly had a bright future in a rapidly growing and improving league.
From the stories told about Skotis, it appears he was a very well liked teammate and player on the ice in Greece, with those in the community in mourning after his passing.
At this point, it's unclear what the reason behind his passing was, but it is incredibly tragic nonetheless, as the league in Greece will continue to honour his memory moving forward.
We too take this time to also send our prayers, thoughts and condolences to the family, friends and former teammates of Skotis, and we hope that his positive memory will continue to impact the sport of hockey in Greece for a long time to come.
Rest in Peace, Dimitris Skotis.
