The Calgary Flames have been without a captain for the last two seasons now after Mark Giordano was claimed in the 2021 Expansion Draft by the Seattle Kraken. But the team is planning to have one next season.

Newly-appointed General Manager Craig Conroy confirmed this week that they will have a captain in place before the start of the 2023-24 season and will discuss their options with Head Coaching candidates.

Conroy also mentioned that he wasn't thrilled that the organization didn't fill the vacancy after Giordano left.

"I just struggled with it each year, but obviously that's a decision that was above me," Conroy said. "In the end, you need one person to go in and talk to the coach. Really, I think that has to be done. That's what I've always experienced in the NHL and to not have it was weird, to me."

The Flames have several viable candidates on their roster, but the most likely to have the 'C' on his chest next season is Mikael Backlund, who's been with the organization since being drafted by them in 2007.

Among the other options for the Flames are forward Tyler Toffoli, as well as defencemen MacKenzie Weegar and Rasmus Andersson.
