The city of Calgary and the Flames will finally starting building a new arena
The Calgary Flames have needed a new arena for quite sometime with the old Scotiabank Saddledome being originally buit in 1983. It is the second-oldest arena in the NHL, only the New York Rangers home rink, Madison Square Garden outdates it. After much back and forth between the city and franchise, a deal was finally agreed upon in late April of 2023.
Sportsnet's Eric Francis was the first to report the news, revealing that the City of Calgary and the Province of Alberta will officially begin construction of a new $926 million Event Centre on Monday with a sod-turning event. The Event Centre includes a new 18,000-seat arena that will become the new home of the Flames.
"As a Calgarian I'm thrilled to report that on Monday the Flames, city and province will officially start the building of the $926 million Event Centre with a sod turning event.
I'm told design renderings will also be unveiled Monday, almost nine years after Ken King unveiled the team's first vision of a new NHL arena.
The 18,000-seat home of the Flames will also include a community rink, a parkade and an indoor and outdoor event plaza.
It will be built two blocks north of the Saddledome, where the massive Cowboys tent is currently being dismantled.
The hope is that construction will be completed in time for the 2027-28 season."
Once the buidling is completed, it will become the fourth home for the Flames franchise, which began in Atlanta in 1972 and played in the downtown Omni Coliseum before financial issues forced the franchise to relocate to Calgary in 1980.
