Max Comtois is a bit of a head scratcher. Drafted in the second round by the Anaheim Ducks in 2017, Comtois was expected to be part of the Ducks rebuild as time went on. However, it didn't work out, and now he finds himself with a contract outside of North America.
Dynamo Moscow of the KHL states it has signed Comtois to a one-year agreement.
"Now it's official - Maxime Comtois has become a Dynamo Moscow player!
During his career, the Quebec native played for Anaheim and Carolina. In total, the star player has 212 games in the NHL and 87 (38+49) points."
Comtois played five seasons for the Anaheim Ducks, leading the team in points in 2020-21. He was cut loose by the Ducks in 2023, who decided not to make him a qualifying offer as a restricted free agent. Comtois signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL last year, which served as the AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes. Other than one game with the Canes, Comtois stayed in the minors, scoring 19 goals and 44 points in 65 games.
"Max Comtois is heading to Russia. Led the 2020-21 Ducks in points and spent the rest of his time in the NHL as a fourth liner."
Comtois captained Team Canada to a gold medal at the 2018 World Junior Championship. He also won gold with Canada at the World Championship in 2021.
