The Athletic's Mark Lazerus and Scott Powers suggested today that Kyle Davidson is set up to have a big offseason this summer.
The Blackhawks will certainly be in a position to make some moves with nearly 30 million dollars in cap space to work with.
This may lead to the team being top contenders for free agents such as Mikko Rantanen or Mitch Marner, but it could also put them in a position to make a more shrewd move.
The two Athletic reporters suggest that Kyle Davidson could use some of that cap room, as well as the team's advanced draft capital to sign a big-name restricted-free-agent to an offer sheet.
Notably, Davidson has set himself up for this possibility with a recent trade.
This came when the Avalanche traded Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes.
As part of that deal, the Blackhawks also dealt Taylor Hall to the Canes in exchange for their own third-round draft pick this year.
The team would need that pick if they were to offer sheet a prominent player like Rossi, Johnston, or Knies.
The Wild, Leafs, and Stars are all in a much tighter situation when it comes to the NHL salary cap next year.
As a result, all three teams could have difficulty matching Chicago's offer depending on the specifics.
While offer sheets are generally quite rare, we did see the St. Louis Blues pull it off successfully last summer, so perhaps this will be the beginning of a new trend across the league.
