Red Wings to place former 6th overall pick on waivers to terminate his contract
Earlier this week it has been reported that a Detroit Red Wings and Filip Zadina divorce was in the works provided the Red Wings were able to find a willing trade partner that would be able to facilitate the remainder of the 23-year-olds contract that will pay him $1.825 million this season and next.
Now almost seven days later Sportsnets' National Hockey League Insider Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the team is expected to put Zadina on Waivers for the purpose of a contract termination and while Zadina is leaving a lot of money on the table, it appears he's doing what best for him leaving the Motor City.
Zadina played thirty games for the Red Wings contributing 3 goals to go along with 4 assists, but was a -5 with ten penalty minutes during that time. In Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League, he suited up for two games and had 1 point.
If Zadina is released he has the ability to sign wherever he wishes and a new organization could be what is needed for the young Right Winger. There may also be a possibility that he signs in Europe to be closer to home in Czechia.
Whatever happens, it would be a disappointing end to his time in Detroit which drafted him sixth overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. He accumulated 28 goals and 40 assists across 190 games.
