Leon Draisaitl makes one of the most expensive purchases of his entire life
Edmonton Oilers star Leon Draisaitl has just made one of the most expensive purchases of his entire life.
In a post on social media this week, Draisaitl shared that he's now a co-owner of a team in a new Indoor Football League (Soccer for those in North America) in Germany. Draisaitl, along with Claudio Pizarro, a long-time professional player including 17 years for the Peruvian National Team, are the owners of FC Plyrs United.
The league, called 'Icon League' was founded by a German streamer named Elias Nerlich and Toni Kroos, a legendary footballer in Germany who won the World Cup in 2014 and is a five-time UEFA Champions League winner with Spanish club Real Madrid.
Other owners in the Icon League include former David Alaba, Franck Ribery and Luciano. The 14-team Icon League is set to get underway on the 1st of September at Lanxess Arena in Cologne, with each participating team playing 13 games, while the Final will be held in Munich at the yet-to-be-opened SAP Garden, which will be the home for German hockey club EHC Red Bull Munich.
All of the Icon League's games will be streamed for free on Twitch, around 1 or 2 pm Eastern Time, but more information is set to be released in the coming weeks.
"The Indoor-Soccer-League called Icon-League was founded by Elias Nerlich (EliasN97) one of the biggest, if not THE biggest content creator in Germany and Toni Kroos, one of the greatest German soccer players of all time. There are 14 Teams represented by their Teamheads. Those are Soccer player, former Soccer player, Rapper, Content-creator and other celebrities known in Germany. Most known might be David Alaba, Franck Ribery and Luciano. The League will start on September, 1st in the Lanxess Arena, the home of the Cologne Sharks. Every team has 13 games and will collect 3 points per win. The Finals will be in the brand-new SAP Garden in Munich. The games will be Live-streamed on Twitch. Most likely at 7 or 8pm CET. That's all we got so far. There is a Video about some more detailed infos, I hope the translation can help you out if you need that informations." Oilers Nation Germany said.
Football is arguably the biggest sport in Germany and they most recently hosted the 2024 UEFA European Championship, but it's going to be interesting to see how this new indoor league is received publicly with so many well known sports figures involved.
