Montreal haven't been able to generate enough offensive this season. The top line of Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield and Slafkovsky providing the bulk of the offensive for the team. Forwards Brendan Gallagher and Jake Evans are tied for fourth in scoring amongst forwards on the team with a mere 16 points. This further illustrates how starving this team is for a offensive boost.
A player that is widely known to be available is Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras. The 22 year old went through tough negotiations with his team which lead to him holding out of training camp before finally agreeing on a three-year contract with a cap hit of $5.75M.
Insider Pierre LeBrun confirmed that Montral general manager Kent Hughes has inquired about the New York native Zegras.
LeBrun confirms here that "among the 4-5 clubs who called the Ducks about Trevor Zegras, there is #CH".
The Ducks aren't keen on trading him but are listening carefully. And the interest from Kent Hughes is real.
Zegras has struggled this season only producing 4 goals and 7 points in 20 games this season. He is coming off back to back career high seasons putting up 65 points last season and 61 points during the 2021-22 season. The offense is there to unlock.
The cost won't be cheap. Zegras played on a line with Cole Caufiled while at the United States Development Program, so the familiarity is there.
