The New York Islanders recently debuted controversial blue liner Tony DeAngelo, and now he's opened up on his return to the NHL after a stint in the KHL in Russia.
The past few weeks have been a whirlwind for former NHL defenseman Tony DeAngelo, and shortly after having his contract terminated in Russia, he was back in the NHL, signing a surprise deal with the New York Islanders.
Just weeks after moving back to North America from Russia, he was on the ice for his NHL return, and while he didn't record a point in 25 minutes of ice time, his team pulled out a huge victory as he looked to get re-acclimated at the NHL level.
Now, he's opened up on what a roller coaster of emotions the last few weeks have been, reflecting on his return to the NHL just a few months after he couldn't get a deal in the off-season.
"It's just great to be back. It's a great opportunity for me. I'm grateful for it. As for hockey, I'm not going to change my game. I'm still going to play with poise, patience, and confidence. The touches will come, but it was a good start tonight and a good win. Two weeks ago, it was something that looked not impossible but pretty bleak.»
Unsurprisingly, DeAngelo revealed that he wasn't expecting an NHL return when he was terminated in Russia, stating that an NHL return appeared to be almost impossible, and while it took an injury for a spot to open up for him, he's grateful for the opportunity.
"Obviously, injuries happen across the league. You don't wanna see anybody go down. But a void opened up, and I just got back [from Russia], so the timing worked out.»
It's unclear how big a role he will play for New York in 2024/25 or whether or not the locker room issues will continue to hold him back, but if he can improve off the ice, there's clearly still a spot in the NHL for a player of his skillset.
