It was a disappointing end to their season, but the Jets need to turn the page quickly and focus on the draft and free agency in July. The Jets have quite a few pending UFAs, most notably Tyler Toffoli and Sean Monahan and while it's unclear what their future holds, there is another Jet who could find his way out of Manitoba via trade in the coming months.
That player is Nikolaj Ehlers, who could use a fresh start elsewhere and recently, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period linked the Danish forward to the New York Islanders.
Ehlers, 28, bounced back in 2023-24 after injuries limited him to only 45 games in the season prior. In 82 games this season, Ehlers had 61 points (25 goals, 36 assists), 29 penalty minutes and was a plus-27.
The Islanders certainly won't be the only team interested in Ehlers' services this summer as any team that's looking for some secondary scoring will be in the market for a player like the Jets forward, if he is made available by the team. Ehlers has one year remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $6 million and a modified no-trade clause.
With Ehlers having a bounce back year, many are wondering what he could fetch on the trade market and if it could be a first-round pick, like Pagnotta is curious about. We'll have to wait and see how the trade market develops in the coming weeks and if a team brings an offer to Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff that he can't refuse.
