After the Boston Bruins signed their number one goalie, Jeremy Swayman, to an eight-year, $66 million deal, fans believed the same type of deal would be coming for Igor Shesterkin and the New York Rangers.
The goalie never shied away from speaking his mind about his upcoming contract. After proving that he's among the NHL's elite between the pipes, he knows that he deserves to be paid accordingly. Shesterkin even mentioned that he's looking to get something around $12 million a year.
Since he signed his four-year, $5.66 million AAV deal with the Rangers in 2021, Shesterkin and the Rangers won four playoff rounds.
The goalie is set to become a free agent after the current season, and talks about his next deal are already getting heated.
In breaking news, Kevin Weekes revealed that the Rangers made him an offer that would've made him the highest-paid goalie in the NHL, surpassing Carey Price's eight-year, $10,500,000 AAV deal with the Montreal Canadiens.
According to Weekes, Shesterkin received an eight-year, $11 million AAV contract offer from the Rangers and turned it down:
At some point, players asking for that much money can only hurt the team. Even if he performs very well, taking a big part of the salary cap knowing that management will need to make tough choices and won't be able to get some players, isn't something that players looking to win a Stanley Cup should do. And it's not like he ever led the Rangers to the Finals.
Being a part of a winning team requires sacrifices. Let's hope we don't see the situation escalate like it did with Jeremy Swayman and the Bruins.
