After an up-and-down start to the 2024/25 season, the Toronto Maple Leafs appear to be finding their consistency over the last few games, and in their latest 4-0 victory over the Boston Bruins, they went to battle without captain Auston Matthews. Reportedly, the star centre is dealing with a hip injury which seemed fairly innocuous at the time, but now, worry appears to be growing within Maple Leafs camp about the injury.
According to reporter David Alter, Matthews will not be participating at practice on Thursday, and while this doesn't mean he's officially out for their next game, it's certainly not a great sign at all.
In Matthews' absence, the team moved Max Domi to the top line to centre Mitch Marner and Matthew Knies to great success, and with stars like William Nylander standing up in his absence, the team are more than capable of competing without him. If that absence extends into a lengthy period of time however it becomes a much different story,
Early in the season, there's been a lot of growing pains for Matthews and new Head Coach Craig Berube, but things have been clicking as of late, with the team moving to 7-5-2 through 14 games. While there's been no official update on Matthews potential return to practice and to the lineup, it still doesn't appear to be a serious injury, so hopefully we see him back on the ice in the very near future as he looks to lead this team deep into the Stanley Cup Playoffs during his first campaign as the captain of this storied franchise.
