Marner, a member of the core four would not have been put in this situation had former general manager Kyle Dubas not handed out money to what he felt were the top four players on the Maple Leafs during his tenure at the top of the helm and while a quick fix isn't likely to occur, it should be believed that Marner will be in the lineup on opening night in October.
While deals take time and ones of this perceived magnitude take even longer it's likely that Marner plays out the season, sees how things go and decides whether he even wants to entertain the idea of coming back; that's if the Maple Leafs choose to offer him a deal worth signing.
It's hard to say what either party is thinking currently and to be honest, it doesn't matter. If Brad Treliving and Craig Berube believe they can work with Marner and see what he has under a different coaching staff or if Treliving gets an offer that he can't refuse and decides to bring it to Marner, will it make a difference? With as many variables today as there have been in recent memory it may make sense to just remain status quo and see what it gives you. There may be an awful lot of unhappy people who believe a change is needed, but it should only happen if it makes the club better immediately.
