J.T. Miller Nearly Traded to Rangers by Canucks Two Years Ago: Is Their Renewed Interest a Coincidence?
The Canucks nearly traded J.T. Miller two years ago, and now with his recent departure from the team, it begs the question if he could be traded this year.
The Vancouver Canucks announced last month that veteran forward J.T. Miller would be stepping away from the team for a little while due to personal issues.
While the team has offered no further explanation, the speculation of what was going on ran rampant, be it things going wrong in his personal life and/or with his mental health, talks of a possible trade, to even wanting out of Vancouver completely.
With all the speculation going around, Miller's name did come up in connection with the New York Rangers.
Arthur Staple and Peter Baugh of 'The Athletic' reported that Rangers GM Chris Drury did engage the Canucks on Miller recently, but his reluctance to include Braden Schneider in any potential package might have doomed a possible deal.
«A league source said the Rangers recently inquired with the Canucks about J.T. Miller, who is currently on an indefinite leave of absence,» it reads. «Miller was a 2011 first-round pick by the Rangers and has been coveted by Drury before - the Rangers were after Miller before the 2021-22 trade deadline, but wouldn't include Braden Schneider in a deal. Miller then signed a seven-year extension worth $8-million a year, pulling him off the market.»
This brought up news that the Rangers did try to acquire Miller a couple of seasons ago, but the trade ultimately failed.
Miller, who last played on Nov. 19, recorded six goals and 16 points in 17 games this season.
The Rangers would like to get him back in New York obviously, but he needs to continue to get his mental state in check as he goes through this hard time and does what's best for his future.
