Florida is in the process of trying to sign their leading scorer Jonathan Huberdeau to an eight-year contract extension, the club's cap space for the 2023-24 season will be limited and it might result in being unable to sign Weegar to an extension of his own.
The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta reported on Tuesday morning that Weegar is aware of the trade chatter and understands a move could be possible.
The 28-year-old is making $4.75 million in salary in 2022-23, but comes with a $3.25 million salary cap hit. He does not own any no-trade protection.
The Ottawa Senators and Dallas Stars are among the teams believed to have interest in the Panthers' defenceman.
Weegar has been very effective on a stacked Florida Panthers squad. He averaged 23 minutes a night playing on the top defensive pairing with Aaron Ekblad. Weegar had 8 goals and 36 assists for 44 points in 80 games played. Those numbers were all career highs for the 28 year old defenceman.
