Breaking News - CHL to ban players from Russia and Belarus?
Every league in the world is working on ways they can handle the current Russian Invasion of Ukraine and with news that Belarus is assisting Russia it appears leagues are having to consider all options. Today the IIHF announced that they had banned both teams from upcoming IIHF sponsored tournaments. The NHL announces they'd suspended all Russian partnerships and now the CHL is set to one up even those decisions.
According to Jeff Marek of the Jeff Marek Podcast the CHL is set to meet tomorrow to discuss a motion to address the situation.
The Canadian Hockey League will hold an executive call on Wednesday to discuss the Russia situation. There's some speculation the CHL may ban Russian and Belarusian players from the import draft but I'm told nothing has been decided yet.
This would impact the eligibility of these upcoming players, while there is also an expectation that current players may have a difficult time entering Canada for next year's season.
