The Calgary Flames and defenceman Mackenzie Weegar appear to be getting close on a long-term extension. Weegar and Jonathan Huberdeau were among the pieces that GM Brad Treliving acquired when he sent Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers earlier in the summer.

The rumored deal appears to be an 8 year extension with a AAV in the range of $6.25 million to $6.50 million.

The 206th pick from the 2013 draft, skated in 80 games with the Florida Panthers last season tallying 8 goals and 36 assists for 44 points. In his six seasons in Florida, he as developed into a steady top pairing defender.

Weegar, 28, is now in the final year of a deal he signed with Florida that pays him $3.25 million against the cap each season. He's headed to unrestricted free agency at the end of this deal, and will likely get a big raise.
