Carolina Hurricanes defenseman career likely over after another injury
As the Carolina Hurricanes headed into training camp the team received some tough news about defenseman, Jake Gardiner. Gardiner was expected to return in time for training camp, as he was cleared to play back in June of this year.
Gardiner had been out due to surgery on his hip and spent all if last season on long-term injured reserve. Gardiner last played during the 2020-2021 season when he played 26 games. Gardiner put up 8 assists while averaging 16:03 time on ice during that time, but persistent back issues have derailed his career.
While it was reported that he was fit enough for camp back in June, the latest news explains why the club has brought in Calvin De Haan to fill in on the blue line, while Gardiner continues to heal.
Given the extended injury history and problems faced by Gardiner it is expected that this latest setback could mark the end of his career.
