Detroit Red Wings get the worst possible news after placing Alex Nedeljkovic
Yesterday Steve Yzerman made the difficult decision to place Alex Nedeljkovic on waivers. Yzerman had acquired Nedeljkovic from the Carolina Hurricanes last summer and many felt that he would be the answer to the Red Wing's goaltending issues. That unfortunately hasn't been the case.
This season Nedeljkovic has seen action in 9 games and has posted a record of 2-4-2. On a rebuilding team the record isn't the problem, but Nedeljkovic has posted a save percentage of .880 and a 4.09 goals against average. The Red Wings were desperately hoping that someone would take a flyer on Nedeljkovic and take his contract off their books.
Unfortunately, according to Elliotte Friedman, no team was willing to take on that risk.
Nedeljkovic and Caamano clear. No one new on waivers today
Nedeljkovic will now report to the AHL. For the Red Wings, while assigning Ned to the minors will save them limited cap space, they will still be forced to eat the majority of his contract. The inability to clear cap space for the Red Wings will be a problem as they will now bury about $6,000,000 in cap for Jakub Vrana and Nedeljkovic.
