After the Edmonton Oilers 4-0 game 2 loss at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche, Darnell Nurse tried to send a message by getting into some extracurricular activities. After a few extra shots the referees were quick to jump in to make sure things didn't get out of hand.
Nurse yelled and complained the whole way to the penalty box. But one thing that may have been missed on first glance, was an Avalanche fan also trying to get in a few punches on Nurse.
Darnell Nurse has had a terrible two games. He has been on the ice for 7 of the Avalanche's 12 goals scored this series. Nurse is a -5 with only 3 shots on goal and averaging just over 20 minutes a night. It is pretty obvious that Nurse is hurt and there have been rumours of a hip injury. But if he is that hurt what is Jay Woodcroft doing putting Nurse out on the ice with under a minute left in a 4-0 game? At what point do we start worrying about Nurse's long-term health?
The Oilers signed him last summer to an 8 year $9.25million per year extension. Two weeks after the Colorado Avalanche signed Cale Makar to a 6-year $9million per year contract. So if the Edmonton Oilers believe that Darnell Nurse is a top defenceman in this league, they need to protect him. Whether it's sit him a few games to heal, or shelter his minutes. What is clear though is that Darnell Nurse is a liability on the ice right now for the Oilers.
