Fans upset and confused by 'controversial' opening goal
The Tampa Bay Lightning opened the scoring on an Anthony Cirelli goal only 36 seconds into Game 4. The goal came with some controversy, but undeservedly so. As Darcy Kuemper attempted to make a save the puck struck his mask knocking it off. Anthony Cirelli picked up the rebound and quickly buried it.
To many this was a textbook goal, but there was a large segment of fans who weren't aware of the rules.
But much to the surprise of these people it appears that the officials got the call right.
Rule 9.6: When a goalkeeper has lost his helmet and/or face mask and ... the opposing team has control of the puck, play shall only be stopped if there is no immediate and impending scoring opportunity.
So while some felt the whistle should have blown the rule clearly states that there was no reason the blow the play dead.
