Toronto was in a tough spot trying to keeping Jack Campbell after last season. He played well for them down stretch but Toronto did not have a lot of cap space to work with. As a result, Campbell signed in Edmonton and Toronto acquired Matt Murry from Ottawa and signed Ilya Samsonov.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman stated that Jack Campbell was upset with the way things worked out in Toronto. Toronto also admitted that they were not happy with the way things went too. Apparently during failed contract discussions things were said that negatively affected both parties. It sounds like both sides left negotiations feeling bitter.
Hurt feeling are bound to happen especially after moving on. Campbell was no doubt frustrated with Toronto. It sure seemed like he wanted to stay but that didn't work out and he signed elsewhere. Toronto went after two different goaltenders in an attempt to offset the loss of Campbell. Realistically, If Toronto was going to re-sign Campbell it would have meant trading away someone off their roster to give them more cap flexibility. That is how it works in today's cap era in the NHL. At the end of the day, you'd think general manager Kyle Dubas and the Leafs organization are worse off without Campbell. Neither Matt Murry or Ilya Samsonov have played well the last few years. Let's see if this motivates Campbell this year and he has a great year with the Oilers and competes for the Stanley Cup.
