TSN1050's OverDrive shared a story on Twitter today involving TSN's Hockey Insider Chris Johnston, who shared his thoughts on the Department of Players' Safety imposing a 2-game ban on Auston Matthews.
When asked by OverDrive1050, Chris Johnston's said:
"I think he deserves a little bit more of the benefit of the doubt, to be honest with you. Auston Matthews has played nearly 400 games, and has scored 3x as many goals, then he has taken penalty minutes."
Johnston underlined the fact that if you were pressed to come up with another example of a time where Matthews lost his temper and crossed a line, you simply couldn't do it, because Matthews is not that type of player.
Auston Matthews has played 390 games and has a total of 68PIM throughout his career. Matthews has not done anything like this in the past, and isn't known to be a very physical player. Johnston also brought up the fact that it was Dahlin who pursued Matthews and who initiated the exchange.
It's certainly out of character for Auston Matthews to play on the wrong side of the line. Could his on-ice frustrations come from the poor officiating we have seen in the NHL as of late? It's certainly possible. He has to be getting frustrated by the lack of respect he's getting from NHL officials.
