Insider reveals Auston Matthews asking price and it's more than the Maple Leafs are willing to pay
This past summer Nathan MacKinnon signed a contract set to make him the highest paid player in NHL History. This upcoming summer Auston Matthews is eligible to sign a new contract for himself. The expectation has always been that Matthews would seek to be paid as the highest paid player in the league.
Now according to Nick Kypreos, Matthews is not simply looking to make a but more than MacKinnon, he's looking to clear him by a substantial amount. The contact Matthews is seeking is also likely going to have a significant impact on the complete construction of the team.
Kypreos shared the following information:
Auston Matthews is looking for an 8 year, $15M AAV extension on his next contract. Per, Nick Kypreos.
Kypreos says the Leafs won't simply "hand it over" to Matthews, and contract negotiations will last a while. Kypreos also mentioned the longer the two sides go without an extension, the trade talks surrounding William Nylander will get stronger. If Kypreos is right this situation could make the Maple Leafs salary cap situation much more difficult to manage. The Maple Leafs will also have to ask themselves, is Auston Matthews truly worth $15,000,000 per season?
