Jack Campbell already relegated to the role of backup in Edmonton
Jack Campbell spent his entire career as a backup goalie, that was until an injury to Frederik Andersen thrust Campbell into a starter role. This past summer after only about 40 games as a starter, the Edmonton Oilers opted to give Campbell a 5 year deal worth $5,000,000 per season. While it's only been 6 games, that deal isn't looking good for the Oilers.
Campbell has started 6 games and has gone 4-2-0, but it's other statistics that are troubling. Campbell's goals against average sits at 3.89, while also owning an .888 save percentage. These struggles seem to have carried over from his second half in Toronto last season.
Now it appears Oilers' Head Coach, Jay Woodcroft has already relegated Campbell to a backup role. Before tonight's game Woodcroft announced the team was opting to start Stuart Skinner in place of Campbell.
I think he has a chance to help us win the game.
We have strong belief in both of our goaltenders and Stuart's in there because I think he can help us win the game.
Jack has a clear understanding of our belief in both of our goaltenders. We just want to make sure we're keeping both of them up and running here and playing enough games. We don't want to overuse anybody. We just want to make sure people are up and running.
I think we have two quality goaltenders. I think we're finding different ways to win with both of them and I feel good about both of them.
While Woodcroft continues to try and temper the media's reaction it's clear Skinner has given the Oilers much better goaltending. Skinner currently had a save percentage of .954 and a GAA of 1.44 in 3 appearances.
This is situation to watch. The Oilers are looking to contend and they're going to run with whoever gives them the best chance to win.
