The Pittsburgh Penguins spent most of their summer getting their aging core re-signed. The Pens put out big money to retain both Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. The moves were reportedly pushed heavily by Sidney Crosby who has huge loyalties to both men.

Another Penguin cornerstone will be looking for a new contract as early as next summer and it appears he's looking for his big payday. Guentzel is entering year 4 of a 6 year contract that pays him $6,000,000 per season. Guentzel has played his entire career in Pittsburgh after being drafted 77th overall by the Penguins in 2013.

In 76 games last year Guentzel put up 40 goals and 44 assists for 84 points. This was his 3rd straight point per game season and his 1st 40 goal season. According to Josh Yohe, Guentzel wants to continue his career as a Penguin but it's going to be at a price.

Given last year's production Guentzel is looking for a contract that starts above $8,000,000 per season and if he's able to replicate his production this season that could climb even further. If Guentzel continues his goal scoring he'd be very likely to find himself with a similar deal to Johnny Gaudreau.
