Thursday night Jonathan Huberdeau signed a max 8-year deal with the Calgary Flames. The 8-year deal pays Huberdeau $10,500,000 per season and totals out at $84,000,000. This marked some of the first positive news the Flames and their fan base had received this summer.

After being acquired from the Florida Panthers many believed that Huberdeau would likely test free agency next summer. Rumours had already begun to swirl about teams like the Canadiens would have major interest in his services. But rumours of the Flames demise were greatly exaggerated.

After being traded Huberdeau admitted to being "blindsided" by the trade. Huberdeau and the Panthers were in early stages of a contract extensions and he'd been told to expect a call with an offer. But the next call he received was to inform him he was being traded to Calgary.

After signing an extension Huberdeau would answer questions from the media and he took that chance to take a jab at his former team.

They traded for me and they wanted me, and they were talking highly about me. You know, when you hear that, you want to play for a team that wants you and that's why it was so important to me to sign long term.

I want to be a leader Huberdeau said. l'm at an age where I can do that and that's what I want to do.
